MARTINEZ AND REINEKE WIN 2013-14 ICSA/LASERPERFORMANCE SINGLEHANDED NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS

Minneapolis, Minn. (November 10, 2013) – The Intercollegiate Sailing Association (ICSA)/LaserPerformance Men’s and Women’s Singlehanded National Championships, hosted by Brown University and Salve Regina University, wrapped today in Newport, RI. The championships included the top 18 men and 18 women singlehanded sailors in the nation. The event was held out of Sail Newport and sailors competed on windward/leeward courses with four legs on Narragansett Bay.

Both the men, who sailed new full rig Lasers provided by LaserPerformance and the women, who sailed new Laser Radials from LaserPerformance, completed 18 races in the event in challenging, but great conditions.

Competitors arrived Friday morning to chilly temps in the 40’s and strong breeze from the west ranging from 14 to 20 knots. The winds were shifty and up and down. Many competitors capsized in the wind and waves. Racing on the deep water in the bay also brought some strong current for the sailors to contend with. Six races in both events were completed on Friday. Greg Martinez, a sophomore from Georgetown University, led after the first day of competition in the men’s event. Arielle DeLisser, a senior from William Smith College, led after the first day in the women’s event.

Saturday brought more of the same conditions from Friday: cold temperatures in the 40’s, but slightly lighter winds ranging from 8 to 18 knots out of the west, which shifted to the west/southwest in the afternoon. Six races were completed on the second day of racing on the windward/leeward course. Martinez ’16 from Georgetown was leading again after the second day of racing in the men’s event and Erika Reineke ’16, from Boston College, took the lead in the women’s event.

The temperatures were warmer for racing on Sunday in the mid-50’s and winds were from the west and west/northwest ranging between 12 to 15 knots. The final six races in each fleet were completed today on the windward/leeward course bringing the event total to 18 races in each fleet.

Martinez won the ICSA/LaserPerformance Men’s Singlehanded Nationals, taking home the Glen S. Foster Trophy. He sailed a very consistent event with only a couple of finishes out of the top five. He contributes his success to preparations before the regatta. “I practiced in some funky conditions at Georgetown with my team and trained a lot in the gym,” he says. The windy conditions challenged the sailors to hike hard testing their mental and physical strength. Martinez also says the strong breeze this weekend helped him to be more consistent in the races against the fierce competition. Martinez is also a member of the 2013 US Sailing Development Team.

Juan Perdomo ’17, from Harvard University, won the George Griswold Trophy for finishing in second place, ten points behind Martinez. In third place, just three points behind Perdomo, was Enrique Arathoon ’16, from the College of Charleston.

Erika Reineke ’16, from Boston College, won the ICSA/LaserPerformance Women’s Singlehanded Championships taking home the Jane Lutz Trophy. Reineke says she enjoyed sailing in the breeze this weekend and also spent time preparing with her teammates on the water and with her trainer in the gym. She found the competition on the water to be strong this weekend, “I grew up sailing against most of these girls and it is fun to see how far we have come now competing in a college nationals,” she says. Reineke is also a member of the 2013 US Sailing Team Sperry Top-Sider.

Reineke won the event by twenty points followed in second place by Arielle DeLisser ’14 from William Smith College. Twenty-four points behind DeLisser, in third place, was Christina Frost ’16, from the U.S. Coast Guard Academy.
