Day 1 ICSA Match Race National Championship

Newport Beach, CA (November 16, 2018) – A lovely Southern California day greeted the 10 teams as they arrived for day one of the 2018 ICSA Match Race Nationals for the Cornellius Shields Sr. Trophy. Racing began at around 11:30 in a light but raceable southerly breeze, with the sailing area on the south side of the Newport Beach pier.

The Race Committee, led by PRO Ryan Davidson, was quick to get racing going throughout the day. By 4 p.m., 7 out of the 9 flights in the round robin had been completed.

The SUNY Maritime team, led by senior Kyle Comerford, came out on top for the day with a 6-0 record. Comerford credited his team’s success for the day to their boat handling in the Gov Cup 22s, which are were new to nearly all the competitors at the event.

“We had our main trimmer doing weight management in the boat, which was a big help for me to just focus on driving… Every race, we got pumped up, went out there and made sure not to lose flow,” said Comerford.

Stanford followed close behind with a record of 5-1, and a tie for third stands between Boston College and Dartmouth at 4-2. Racing was completed with two more flights to finish in the round robin, followed by a repechage round between the teams ranked 7-10.

The format after the repechage is as follows:
Quarter finals – first to 3
Semifinals – first to 3
Finals – first 3
