2021 All-American Team, College Sailor of the Year, Quantum Women’s Sailor of the Year and Hall of Fame Honorees Announced

ANNAPOLIS, M.D. (June 29, 2021) – The Intercollegiate Sailing Association is pleased to present the 2021 Virtual All-American Awards in lieu of an in-person ceremony following the National Championships. The Quantum Women’s Sailor of the Year, the Everett B. Morris Trophy for College Sailor of the Year and Robert H. Hobbs Sportsmanship Award were announced with the new inductees to the ICSA Hall of Fame. The names of the winners for the 2020-21 season will be added to the ICSA Hall of Fame displayed at the Robert Crown Center at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md.

A committee of representatives from the seven conferences in the ICSA selects the ICSA All-America Team. To select an All-American skipper, the committee evaluates a competitor based on their competitive record in inter-conference competition as well as conference and national championships. The committee analyzes how this record compares to fellow competitors, the quality of the competition the record was achieved in, and results achieved competing with different crews, the span of the record over the fall and spring seasons, and how the record compares to previous All-American winners.

Evaluating using these criterion presented a challenge this year for the committee due to the sailing seasons not having traditional inter-conference regattas and participation from all schools.

The committee selected six Women’s All-American skippers, three Women’s Honorable Mentions and eight Coed All-American skippers and seven Coed Honorable Mentions.

For All-American crew selections, the committee uses criteria similar to skipper selection, but also considers: demonstrated leadership (may consider seniority), outstanding body mechanics and boat handling skills as well as proven ability to improve the results of the skipper(s) with whom he or she sails. The committee selected nine All-American Crews and nine Honorable Mentions.

The Hall of Fame was established in 1969 to honor individuals for either undergraduate competitive achievement in sailing or outstanding leadership and service to the establishment, development and growth of the sport.

The ICSA honored five individuals for their contributions to the sport of college sailing by inducting them into the ICSA Hall of Fame. To read the full report and letters of nomination for the inductees follow this link.

The James Rousmaniere Award for Student Leadership recognizes an undergraduate for extraordinary achievement in leadership whose efforts have made a significant contribution to the development, progress and success of his or her club or team, conference or the ICSA. This year’s honor was presented to Preston Anderson (Highland Park, Ill.), Bowdoin College ’22, who has been a part of a transformation group of undergraduate leaders that have been pushing college sailing to become more diverse and played a role in helping to educate both sailors and coaches about important topics related to diversity and inclusion.

Ernest “Ernie” Estes (Friendswood, Texas), who has given extraordinary service to college sailing as volunteer, was honored with the Campbell Family Award for Lifetime Service; which was recently re-named at the 2019 Annual Spring College Sailing Meeting to honor the Campbell family’s contribution to the sport of college sailing. It recognizes a career of extraordinary service to college sailing, as a volunteer or professional with the Texas A&M University at Galveston (TAMUG) Sailing Team, TAMUG Sailing Club, and the SEISA Conference at large.

Greg Wilkinson (Rockport, Mass.) who is the head sailing coach at Boston college and who has contributed extensively to the development of college sailing, and Christopher Herbster (Ormond Beach, Fla.) for his support and dedication to the Embry-Riddle Sailing Team, were both awarded the Graham Hall Award for outstanding service by a college sailing professional, which recognizes organizers, administrators, advisors, or coaches who have served the best interest of College Sailing at the club/team, conference or national level.

The Outstanding Service by a volunteer award honors an individual who has volunteered their time, talent and resources to advance the interests of college sailing at the club, team, conference or national level.
